Merritt Arch's responsibilities included programming, design, document production, bidding, and construction administration for the adaptive re-use of the 3-story historic building on the University of Washington Tacoma campus to house the Institute of Technology. The first "smart board" on the Tacoma campus is housed in the conference room.

Tacoma Union Station Restoration & Federal Courts Addition
The restoration and adaptive re-use of the Historic Tacoma Union Station was led by Jim Merritt as the principal-in-charge and design architect team member. The conversion of hte space to a public use rotunda and federal courts and the addition to house the balance of the 12 federal departments were key componenets of the design. The project became a catalyst for the development of Downtown Tacoma.

Metropolitan Park District Headquarters
Jim Merritt led the master plan effort for the entire site that includes the Park headquarters, Cheney Stadium, Heidelberg Athletic Fields, and Foss High School. The project moved to the design and construction of the headquarters facility and related site amenities. The project has received honor awards for design from the AIA and the Masonry Institute of Washington.

Flight Simulator Modifications
McChord Air Force Base
The project centered around enlarging the flight simulator bay in a design consistent with the vocabulary of the exisiting building. All of the details including shape, surfaces, and flashings were developed consistent with the exisiting characteristics.

The News Tribune
The News Tribune addition and renovation presented a significant challenge. The task was completed while the newspaper continued to put out the daily newspaper for over 200,000 subscribers. Merritt led the design effort with the newspaper technical specialist, Blevins-Harding.

2003 Public Meetings
Fort Steilacoom Park
Jim Merritt facilitated two public meetings in 2003 to assist the City of Lakewood and Pierce County Parks in the process towards a Master Plan for Fort Steilacoom Park. Merritt Arch was brought into the process to lead the meetings because of Jim’s ability to work with the public to make sure they feel their opinions are heard and appreciated. The goal of the meetings was to move from ideas to alternatives to choices in the Master Plan.
